In all fairness, director George Mendeluk had an almost impossible task of telling the story of Stalin's reign of terror in only 103 minutes.

Bitter Harvest is also lit like a Pre-Raphaelite painting that exudes an atmosphere of unreal gloss and innocence.

Great movie - powerful - brought me and my wife to tears several times.

Very thoughtful and beautiful film bringing attention to a horrific genocide in a subtle subtle and engaging manner. Artful cinematography highlighted Ukrainian traditions and managed to be suggestive without being gratuitously violent with respect to the famine and fight scenes. The incredibly complex events and Stalin's motivations were portrayed as best one could considering the expansive topic, running time, and low budget.

Definitely, the film has been overly underrated by film critics. Just compare audience reviews and the critics'. Quite a discrepancy there. A must watch for everyone. In times when the Kremlin propaganda, including the denial of Soviet regime atrocities, is on a rise and Ukraine is again under attack, truth must be told, awareness needs to be raised. The film, though not perfect, is a step in the right direction.
