Anaïs is twelve and bears the weight of the world on her shoulders. She watches her older sister, Elena, whom she both loves and hates. Elena is fifteen and devilishly beautiful. I'm wondering if I'm a sucker for these films that seem almost too uncomfortably real, because they all hit me in different ways. Fat Girl is like Elephant in approach but dealing with completely different things, but still relevant. It's shocking, sad, and more disturbing by reflection than visually.

An incredibly disturbing look into the lives of two adolescent girls, one mature but young and the other one immature and older. It's very clinical and it's as subtle as you expect it to be, but it's a fascinating experience and the 2 lead girls are absolutely incredible in their roles while at the same time Catherine Breillat directs this film with an undeniable passion in which every element combines to create an emotional tsunami that devastates even the most experienced viewers. However... as I mentioned before, the film is very graphic and it's extremely unpleasant so those that are prudish or extremely sensitive should stay away.

much has been made of the last scene of this movie, and it is truly frightening, repulsive and yet we cant look away, or bring our selves to feel sorry for the fat girl...

Get over the numb shock that accompanies the end credits, give yourself some distance from it and you may actually appreciate the complex machinations behind Breillat's brave, troubled work.
