Phillip Seymour Hoffman gives yet another stellar performance in which a jewelry store hold up, thought to be easy, backfires drastically. With more twists and turns than Chubby Checker in the 50's.

Rec by Lady D. Before The Devil Knows You're Dead is a great drama about family...but that's not all. What makes this movies special (apart from a good story and great acting) is the non-linear way this story is told. This movie starts in the middle of the story where a robbery goes wrong and then you get to see the repercussions it has to those who are directly or indirectly involved....but you also get to see things that happened days leading up to the robbery. All of this jumping back and forth in the timeline can be a bit confusing, so attention is acquried. I love the way this movie progressed because it fleshed out the characters so well and kept me curious to know how this ends. Before The Devil Knows You're Dead is definately a movie I'm gonna watch again.

The story is a riveting demonstration that crime doesn't pay, and that sometimes it's a complete and total disaster. Everything that could possibly go wrong in a robbery does in this film, from start to finish as we jump across the timeline in the fashion of Reservoir Dogs (another great film about a crime collapsing on itself). One of the most revered directors paired up with a fantastic cast (Phillip Seymour Hoffman is a god among ants when it comes to acting) and a solid script equals all kinds of levels of awesome. Just don't watch the first minute.

Can't rate this one because I'm too close to it. But since so many of Sid's films are amongst my favorites the experience of producing one of his films makes this my favorite.

Lumet proves once again that he's one of the heaviest hitters in the non-auteur trajectory.
