It has the unfortunate taste of something lean that's been plumped up with empty calories.

At first glance, it gave me a very "Uptown Girls" vibe on an overdose, but as the story progressed and the relationship between Richie and his virtuous nice, Sophia developed, I couldn't help but to fall in love with the film. It was raw and real and simply amazing. The score and soundtrack were paired up perfectly with an incredible cinematography and Richie's point of view of the lower, dirtier, and darker parts of NYC. The cast was amazing. From Wesley's rage, to Perlman's morbid word's of wisdom and of course there were the titular roles of Richie and Sophia (Christensen & Ptacek) who had not only magnificent chemistry but fantastic acting chops. This movie has definitely made it into my favorites.

Throughout the movie, you have the feeling of being dragged along on an impromptu journey by a filmmaker who is traveling without the benefit of a GPS device.

Based on an oscar winning short. This is one of the finest dramas this year about a man finding purpose in life after hitting rock bottom, He finds this in his young niece he has to babysit for his estranged sister who gets in trouble . The characters are true to life and nothing is sugarcoated here. It also finds light dry humor in certain scenes to lighten it's dark themes and mood. Ron Perlman has a few nice moments in this picture as well. Overall, the film itself is not as perfect as the short was but this also expands on that story creating more life to these beautifully flawed characters. One of my personal favorites this year. Now streaming on Netflix, Amazon and iTunes. .

Before I Disappear is ultimately hampered not by a messy plot but by bland characters who, for the most part, don't so much talk to each other as they monologue at each other.
