Andy Griffith is amazing. he gives one of the best acting performances I've ever seen. Sadly the movie messed him up psychologically. He ended up having a lot of problems stemming from this movie. But it is a great film.

An all time classic, Andy Griffith gives one of the great performances in the history of cinema. He was so good that he retreated into television never again wanting to plunge the emotional depths that Kazan demanded. As a commentary on the power of media it seems more trenchant today then when it was released.

With the 08 election just around the corner, this film is very relevant. In fact, it's a high-octane film, featuring probably the best performance (Griffith) never recognized with an Oscar nomination.

Film hasn't aged at all, instead time caught up to it. Way ahead of its time "A Face in the Crowd" chronicles the rise and fall of insta-celebrity "Lonesome" Rhodes (Andy Griffith) who uses his celebrity to manipulate the masses, or "sheep" as he calls them, even to help advance his political friends. Not a commentary on how fame can corrupt a person (Rhodes is a horrible person from beginning to end) but on the power of celebrity and media over the masses. Gripping and frightening, it also has Andy Griffith's best performance. Anybody who only knows him as Andy Taylor or Matlock will be in for a horrible shock. A tour de force.
