Tiré de la série de Comics écrite par Frank Miller, "Batman : year one" peut être considéré comme la version animée du "Batman begins" de Christopher Nolan, qui puisait à la même source. On y retrouve le même Gotham rétro-futuriste et le Batman des origines, justicier solitaire torturé mais encore inexpérimenté. Les forces du mal sont de simples truands et flics corrompus et non les Freaks habituellement associés à Batman (quoiqu'on y entr'aperçoive Catwoman) , tandis que le fond se partage équitablement entre le parcours de ce Batman débutant et celui d'un commissaire Gordon tout aussi juvénile. Plus fidèle au comic que le film de Nolan, ce "Batman Year one" rend justice au travail de Miller et à la force de son écriture tandis que sa griffe visuelle, fluide, précise et réaliste, change agréablement du Batman animé plus stylisé qu'on connait depuis une vingtaine d'années.

Str8 gritty cartoon flick. Really worth a look when you by your self and could listen to the story properly.

This is quite possibly the greatest comic book adaptation to date! Warner is really hitting home-runs with this animated films, all I can say is Nolan Schmolan. I really can't come up with anything to complain and that's a tough one on a loudmouth like me, perfect animation, casting, adapted script... the result is an excellent Neo-Noir/Superhero film from which movies, animated and live-action, can take their cues from. PLUS it has a very nice back-up Catwoman short by Paul Dini, responsible of writing '92s Batman animated! PS. If you think Batman; Year One by Miller/Mazzucchelli is a "graphic novel" you don't know anything about the medium of comic books...

A great comic book adaptation that clearly establishes one of the most important elements of the Batman mythos: Gotham City. In this movie Gotham becomes a character on its own, with corruption and impunity on every corner, the perfect setting for a vigilante dressed as a Bat. Although the main character is not only Batman but James Gordon as well, both trying to clean Gotham on their own way and with their own resources. Ultimately this is a great animation with a solid new origin for Batman and Gordon that contains universal themes, such as corruption, impunity and injustice, that's what makes it so appealing. Special Mention to the Showcase: Catwoman short film which was also great.
