Batman Returns (1992)

The monstrous Penguin, who dwells in the sewers beneath Gotham, joins up with corrupt mayoral candidate Max Shreck to topple the Batman once and for all. But when Shreck's timid assistant Selina Kyle finds out, and Shreck tries to kill her, she's transformed into the sexy Catwoman. She teams up with the Penguin and Shreck to destroy Batman, but sparks fly unexpectedly when she confronts the caped crusader.

A film that is better than the first, the dark, brooding atmosphere, and excellent casting, help create a Batman film that remains better than most of the films that came after it

The more superhero movies I watch the more I appreciate a time when directors were allowed to get wild and do their own thing, without internet fanboys scrutinizing their every decision. In the past 20 years a movie like this simply wouldn't be allowed to be made.

"I want directors to have less creative freedom in my superhero movies" - said the mindless drones (Channel Awesome contributors probably). Tim Burton made a big budget superhero movie that is unmistakably his own, an aesthetic vision infused with Batman mythos and a poetic narrative. A privilege not many directors have, and some hold that against him. A trio of psychologically messed up characters playing off each other is terrific. Michelle Pfeiffer is THE Catwoman, no other actress comes even close. Danny DeVito's Penguin is an equally despicable and pitiful creation. Fanboys love to whine about comic accuracy only when it suits their arguments, despite the fact that every Batman movie has deviated from the source material. Batman gatekeepers are the most entitled nerds on the planet. You can like or dislike whatever you want, but to have that as your reason for lambasting Burton just shows how hypocritical you all are.

A brilliant sequel thats even darker than it predecessor. This movie is packed with great characters and imagination. Danny DeVito owns the roll of the Penguin and as evil and sick as he's portrayed you connect and sympathize with him as a victim which is genius. Michelle Pfeiffer is equally great as the sexy and deranged Catwoman. Michael Keaton is awesome as usual.
