In 1986 Michael Morton's wife Christine is brutally murdered in front of their only child, and Michael is convicted of the crime. Locked away in Texas prisons for a quarter century, he has years to ponder questions of justice and innocence, truth and fate. Though he is virtually invisible to society, a team of dedicated attorneys spends years fighting for the right to test DNA evidence found at the murder scene. Their discoveries ultimately reveal that the price of a wrongful conviction goes well beyond one man's loss of freedom.

'An Unreal Dream: The Michael Morton Story'. The unbelievable true story of a man wrongfully convicted of murdering his wife, spending 25 years in jail essentially coming to terms with his situation and accepting it, then finally being set free by saints that relentlessly fought for him.

I first heard of this story through a piece by Pamela Colloff. That article is a great and important piece of journalism. I was much more touched by the article than this documentary. Still, an extremely compelling story.

Have this little gem right alongside The Shawshank Redemption. What makes this film stand out is the real life story that has a three-act structure, complete with a villain.

12/9/15 Netflix Another great documentary that was even more interesting to me living in Houston and seeing this unfold in the press as the Innocence Project fought for his release and the wheels of justice turned on Judge Anderson. Lots of lives turned upside down by an unethical and ambitious DA, probably done more often than you think.
