The Big Sleep is a stylish "Film Noir" with a fast paced and confusing plot. However, the sharp dialogue and strong chemistry between Bogart and Bacall will make this a hugely enjoyable experience, whether you understand it or not.

Golden age Hollywood. The dialogue is superb. Humphrey Bogart showing why he is so well regarded, the man is just memorizing as the Private Detective hired to sort out a simple Blackmail case... Of course it never is that simple. It's not long before it turns into Homicides and double crosses. Perfect film noir from Director Howard Hawks.

Dark, seductive, twisty and fresh. Hawks' second outing with Bogie and Bacall concreted the two as a perfect duo and tore every rule the detective story contained previously to bits. The structure of the film is reminiscent to some of William Friedkin's work in the 70s; it starts as a harmless and even light affair and slowly and abysmally enters a nightmarish circuit of violence and corruption. The plot becomes tangled and messy, and toward the end of the film, quite frankly, it doesn't matter because Phillip Marlowe is in over his head and it's exciting.

Bogart and Becall. What a team they make. This is my favorite movie with them together. It is very suspenseful and involving.
