Tsotsi (2005)

A young South African boy from the Johannesburg ghetto named Tsotsi, meaning Gangster, leaves home as a child to get away from his helpless parents. Now a teenage thug, Tsotsi finds a baby in the back seat of a car he's just stolen. He decides that it is his responsibility to care for the infant and in the process learns that maybe the criminal life isn't the best way.

An honest and tough portrayal of a low-rent hood who re-discovers his ability to feel compassion. As beautiful as the story is, Tsotsi realizes that its protagonist has serious devolopmental and intelligence issues so his time with the newborn is never milked for unearned pathos. This movie convincingly creates Tsotsi's world - so totally unlike our own - and makes you believe that even in the debasement of a life of crime there is hope for redemption. Great movie.

i don't get to see very many films taking place in africa- and maybe that's why i found it so interesting.

I loved the way David/Tsotsi tried to recapture something the love he could have had as a child through his relationship with the baby he had mistakenly abducted.

an amazing film with an excellent soundtrack. You totally empathise for the main man/boy and hope he finds his feet outside of the only world he has come to know. And the music is frickin awesome!! (Kwaito)
