Suave, debonair brilliant businessman tries to keep his business afloat despite intense strains and pressures from all sides. His main problem is his business is under siege from gangsters who continually attack his employees and steal his trucks. Can he succeed ? How can he? Can he save his family also? The role of Oscar Isaac kept reminding me of Michael Corleone, even though he is trying his best to avoid going the gangster route. A gripping and smashing film.

A Most Violent Year is a great American piece of cinema. It is beautifully made and shot by as always great cinematographer Bradford Young, smartly directed, and two amazing performances by Oscar Isaac and the always beautiful Jessica Chastain. What a marvelous and memorable piece of work.

A finely tuned character study that doesnt conform to genre expectations and instead transcends them. Slow, brooding tension and character development anchor the film into an unforgettable whole.

With this cast and director pedigree, I was expecting a good film, but AMVY exceeded my expectations. This is a film for those who appreciate film. It's quiet, there's more dialogue than action (although the several action sequences that are present are very well done, almost a throwback to ones from The French Connection), and the movie makes you think. I admittedly have a soft spot for films set in this era, and that part is so well done. But the story is compelling, the performances uniformly very good, and the film is original and not for viewers who need to see something explode every five minutes to be satisfied. You know who I'm talking about. The people who expect that in a movie should stay far, far away from AMVY. Cinephiles and those who appreciate well paced, well thought out and intelligent drama will enjoy.
