Dancer in the Dark (2000)

Selma, a Czech immigrant on the verge of blindness, struggles to make ends meet for herself and her son, who has inherited the same genetic disorder and will suffer the same fate without an expensive operation. It's great to see a movie so courageous and affecting, so committed to its own differentness.

La habia visto con anterioridad, pero Bailarina en la Oscuridad es una pelÃcula que podrÃa ver una y muchas veces mÃ¡s. Pese a no ser fan de Bjork, la mÃºsica encanta y cautiva la atenciÃ³n. Me impacta como la historia contrasta la inocencia de la protagonista, con la maldad de su vecino, Bill. La maldad que no estÃ¡ en tiranos, ni enemigos vestidos con trajes vistosos, sino que forma parte de la cotidianeidad (tal como en Dogville, que malos eran esos pueblerinos). En fin... en una palabra, se trata de un film, impactante, y aÃºn recuerdo claramente quue la primera vez que la vi, en el cine, al finalizar abruptamente la Ãºltima canciÃ³n, por varios minutos nadie en la sala pudo pararse de su asiento.

Much less a tragedy of capital punishment than a meditation on the mystical nature of music in nature, and the way that an innocent soul may hear it. Bjork brilliantly channeled the musique-concrete of her endemic composing style into a traditional dramatic context, and Lars von Trier's Dogme 95 process found a lush, romantic elegance in this pinnacle of his style.
