A good adaptation of the novel. ( If you didn't like the book then don't wach the movie, if you liked the movie you'll enjoy the novel even more.)

I despise this film, it's just an excuse for lots of crass scenes.

A great movie with some flaws as the filming may lack consistency, however the actors make it fascinating, after i saw it for the first time with friends we had to have several days of non stop discussions about this movie, of course the book was great...

One of the best movies ever made from a classic novel, thanks to Larry Kramer's skillful screenplay adaptation and Ken Russell's artistic direction. The casting too is inspired, with superb performances by Alan Bates, Oliver Reed and Glenda Jackson. Even the supporting roles, such as Eleanor Bron as Hermione, are remarkable. Add gorgeous location cinematography and a lush musical score and you've got...well...perfection. Best seen on the big screen, if you ever get the chance. Obviously a film can't cover as much ground as a 400 page novel, but this IS reasonably faithful to its plot, theme, and characterizations.

Everybody loves to hate Ken Russell now. Back in 1970, they mostly knew him from the films he did for BBC-TV, and they took this adaptation of D.H. Lawrence's novel (with a script by Broadway playwright Larry Kramer) seriously. The acting is fantastic (Glenda Jackson won the Best Actress Oscar), the cinematography is gorgeous, and Lawrence's rough sexuality still shocks. (Georges Delerue's music is still one of the best unreleased soundtracks, too.) Say what you want about later things like "Lair of the White Worm" and worse - Ken Russell had a way with actors.
