In this loose adaptation of Shakespeare's "Henry IV," Mike Waters is a hustler afflicted with narcolepsy. Scott Favor is the rebellious son of a mayor. Together, the two travel from Portland, Oregon to Idaho and finally to the coast of Italy in a quest to find Mike's estranged mother. Along the way they turn tricks for money and drugs, eventually attracting the attention of a wealthy benefactor and sexual deviant.

My favuoirte film ever... I really think that Reaves, Phoeniz and G.V.Sant together are a real blast

The film starts out great, really original and intriguing and then it spirals into chaos that never doens't answered. The whole film had an amateur feel to it, like a point was trying to be made but wasn't. Keanu Reeves puts no charisma into his character, personally, i think anyone could have played that part. River Phoenix however, is faultless. His ability to show narcolepsy, despite not having it, is quite amazing. He really brings something to his character that Keanu Reeves lacks. However, others have completely slated this film but i think it is worth a watch. Its very different to your usual film, and there are some interesting poetic aspects to it. Not bad.

My Own Private Idaho is a film about a damaged man who has no place in the surreal world he inhabits. It's an abstract story about longing for love and a place to call home. One thing that is essential to mention when reviewing this film is River Phoenix's crushing, emotionally resonant performance. Although Van Sant's experimentation could be construed as overwhelming, this is a truly original work peppered with haunting and lyrical moments. There are arguably issues resulting from some of the stylistic choices made, but I think this is a wholly original piece whose out-of-the-box qualities work ultimately to its benefit. Moody, visceral and completely unforgettable, this is, in my eyes, a true masterwork.

There's so much to connect to and admire. Van Sant conquers the mood and arthouse flavor with some real resonance. It's gorgeous to look at, and that includes River Phoenix at his absolute finest.
