Wings of Desire (1987)

Two angels, Damiel and Cassiel, glide through the streets of Berlin, observing the bustling population, providing invisible rays of hope to the distressed but never interacting with them. When Damiel falls in love with lonely trapeze artist Marion, the angel longs to experience life in the physical world, and finds — with some words of wisdom from actor Peter Falk — that it might be possible for him to take human form.

Great cinematography especially in the library (is that me being biased?) and Nick Cave crops up in it, and columbo. Prefer the black and white but thats just me. Going to watch to Faraway so close soon despite its u2 connections.

Bruno Ganz as an inquisitive angel, perhaps, but Peter Falk? What is this German fasination with Colombo????

ahh...Wim Wenders. I just saw this on DVD again today, and am amazed at how well the transfer holds up. So crisp, the black and white, and color so otherworldy. Simply beautiful. I know some have a hard time with this film, (ie the whispered conversations are actually thoughts people the angels encounter) but stick with it - one of Wenders' best.
