Como biografia é diluído e raso. Como entretenimento é frio e impessoal. Resta então pouco para não tornar o filme uma empreitada entediante.

When you watch a film after nearly 59 years & you still feel that you extremely interacted with the picture.....then this film is definitely a classic. The casting is brilliant either Brando, Quinn (which I liked the most) or Peters. The dialog specificity was quite clear to the ear & you won't be surprised when you know that Stienbeck is the one who wrote it. The locations & decor brought you back to the beginnings of the 20th century. I loved it.

Elia Kazan hitch-hikes on John Steinbeck and takes us down South of the Border. Brando is the Once and Future King. You can feel the heat, smell the saddle-leather and taste the trail-dust and chile con carne. The Revolution will be cannibalized. "Tequila for me and my men. We ride at dawn."

Un film politique de Kazan sur la révolution mexicaine et sur les questions connexes au problème révolutionnaire: la violence, l'exercice du pouvoir, la trahison des idéaux, la transition de la guerre à la démocratie,... Très beau rôle pour Brando.

The screenplay was written by John Steinbeck, and it shows. In that, it feels like it was written by a novelist rather than a screenwriter. Also, Steinbeck channels his slow, people sitting around sadly wasting their lives motif (Tortilla Flat, Cannery Row), rather than his more film-worthy epic tragedies (Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, haven't seen East of Eden). Plus, of course, poor leftists good, rich people bad. How can a movie about a fascinating character like Emiliano Zapata be so unbelievably boring!? And for that matter, never really letting us understand who Zapata was!? He goes from man of the people to corrupt despot to quickly, we never understand, or care, why. In that respect, Viva Zapata! plays like a poor man's All the King's Men. Brando and Quinn are good, but that's the only positive element.
