not only is javier bardem amazing, but come on...julian schnabel's movies are great. plus johnny depp. plus fairuz on the soundtrack. the book is great, too, but this is a beautiful film about the talented poet, reinaldo arenas. thought there should have been more when he goes to nyc, but hey, that's just me.

This movie is absolutely breathtaking. Javier Bardem does an excellent job playing Reinaldo. Such a deep and soulful movie that stuns you visually and emotionally. We'd all love to see Johnny Depp a little bit more, however... especially in that cute little drag queen get-up.

In this moment, Javier Bardem became one of my favourite actors. His portrayal of Cuban poet and novelist, Reinaldo Arenas (1943-1990) transcends culture and sexuality making the experience utterly human and personal. Director Julian Schnabel's treatment of Arenas' poetry deserves praise for allowing the grace of the Spanish word to blend and flow with the beauty of the Cuban landscape.

Great film about a Cuban poet who happens to be gay. His life in repressed Cuba and then an escape to New York. Poignant and a depiction of the indomitable spirit of a human being to persevere to the end of his life.
