¡Qué Viva México! (1979)

Having revolutionized film editing through such masterworks of montage as Potemkin and Strike, Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein emigrated West in hopes of testing the capabilities of the American film industry. Quickly ostracized from Hollywood, Eisenstein, Grigory Alexandrov, and photographer Eduard Tisse (at the urging of author Upton Sinclair) wandered south of the border, where they began filming a highly stylized documentary about the people and volatile social climate of Mexico. Unfortunately, a lack of funds prohibited the film's completion, and the famed director was unable to edit the film. In 1979, by referring to Eisenstein's extensive notes and sketches, Alexandrov assembled the most definitive version of the film; as close to Eisenstein's vision as one is ever likely to see.

Not the greatest film Eisenstein ever made, but still, Que Viva Mexico is filled with many memorable images and scenes.

SO PRETTY. and this has to be the first silent movie where they didn't act all overly dramatic. probably cuz it's supposed to be a "documentary"... fantastic any way you look at it.

Alexandrov's interpretation of the Eisenstein's Que viva Mxico! becomes rather slippery when analyzed using an auteurist model.

Some striking images (what one would expect from Eisenstein) in this mix of documentary and drama. The "everyday" stories escape the elevation the film wants to give them, and the story about the conflict between landowners and the peasants they abuse bogs the film down.

Some Good Parts In This. But It's Hard To Gauge Without Knowing Eisenstein's True Vision For The Film. Great Score As Well.
