Under Milk Wood (2015)

Two versions of Dylan Thomas' classic play "Under Milk Wood" were shot, with the same cast, one in Welsh, "Dan y Wenallt", and one in English. Directed by Kevin Allen, narrated by and starring Rhys Ifans, the films were shot largely in the Pembrokeshire village of Solfa during the summer of 2014. This surreal and erotic interpretation of Dylan Thomas' work is the first theatrical production of the brilliant, haunting radio play since Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton's 1972 film. Certain to astonish and excite in equal measures, this production reunites director Kevin Allen with actor Rhys Ifans over 15 years after the release of their cult classic "Twin Town". An ensemble Welsh speaking cast of familiar faces is led by Ifans as First Voice and Captain Cat, with Charlotte Church as Polly Garter.

This 2015 version of Under Milk Wood with Rhys Ifans taking on both the role of the narrator and Captain Cat is in a word captivating.

Stephen Carty 29 Oct 2015

Every scene is filled with striking imagery and rich, descriptive language, but the whole thing grows relatively exhausting after a while. Perhaps you can have too much of a good thing.

Guy Lodge 02 Nov 2015

[The film] has been entered for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar - good luck to them, but British cinema has been better represented. So, for that matter, has Dylan Thomas.

Alistair Harkness 02 Nov 2015

Essentially a plotless series of vignettes, linked together as a sort of fever dream of filth, fornication and surreal humour.

Tim Robey 29 Oct 2015

Too many of the film's bawdy inventions and gamey imaginings do little to enhance the spell Thomas cast with words. Far more often, they simply break it.
