Man Push Cart (2006)

Every night while the city sleeps, Ahmad, a former Pakistani rock star turned immigrant, drags his heavy cart along the streets of New York. And every morning, he sells coffee and donuts to a city he cannot call his own. One day, however, the pattern of this harsh existence is broken by a glimmer of hope for a better life.

I'm a big fan of this movie. It gets an extra star for it even being made. Not exactly blockbuster material. The movie depicts a man, probably around 30, from Pakistan who sells coffee, pastries, etc. from a cart in NYC. He's formerly a pop star, the character in the movie. Thus, an enjoy-it-while-you-have-it message. But, also, it shows how well the protaganist keeps things in context. There's definitely tragedy in his life (not being able to connect to or be the guardian of his son, other bad circumstances), but he works hard, and still appreciates some simple pleasures. Certainly an important message for anyone as economic times get harder in today's world. I recommend this film!

This film weaves a sad tale of a mourning husband, absent father, and faded star. It is a little short on detail, and instead achieves poignancy through a succession of subtly depressing social interludes and the daily grind. In this version of the city, casual words cut like knives and random chance is a cruel master. None of the actors are professional, but they all do an excellent job. The movie has a rough, unscripted feel, and a numbing sense of loss.

I loved this movie. It is a very different indie movie. The treatment and story telling is just awesome and unique. The best ever movie about Pakistani people in American. Their wishes, dreams, problems and ...

A quietly devastating character study content to find beauty in the "everyday".

An example of spare, slice-of-life indie cinema at its most unpretentious, Man Push Cart adeptly and subtly layers facts about the protag's history and character into his story.
