Sadistic killer-for-hire Philip Raven becomes enraged when his latest job is paid off in marked bills. Vowing to track down his double-crossing boss, nightclub executive Gates, Raven sits beside Gates' lovely new employee, Ellen, on a train out of town. Although Ellen is engaged to marry the police lieutenant who's hunting down Raven, she decides to try and set the misguided hit man straight as he hides from the cops and plots his revenge.

Great early noir that unfortunately dilutes Greene's novel.Terrific performance from Ladd with stylish and tight direction from Tuttle, despite poor supporting cast.

One of those many 40's films that was just a good solid film but not great. Alan Ladd & Veronica Lake are really good but the films script was a little weak not very well written. It had all the ingredients of a typical noir ie girl, gun and mood lighting, but didn't seem to step into greatness... slightly forgettable. There is really good scene near the end in a trainyard but overrall somewhat bland film. If you watch just enjoy Veronica Lake she more than makes up for the films blandness...

The reason I like film noir is because you honestly don't know what's going to happen and in this gun for hire you feel a sense of suspense for that reason. Love the fact that Veronica Lake's character stays true to herself and Alan Ladds character is ruthless and not easily swayed which makes for a truly odd couple

Great film noir. I seriously could watch the part where he shoots the one chick throug the door over and over and over. It can be super cliche sometimes, but when you're in the mood for it, it's great. and really, I'm biased towards Ladd and Lake because they were representing the shorties like me!
