Sadistic killer-for-hire Philip Raven becomes enraged when his latest job is paid off in marked bills. Vowing to track down his double-crossing boss, nightclub executive Gates, Raven sits beside Gates' lovely new employee, Ellen, on a train out of town. Although Ellen is engaged to marry the police lieutenant who's hunting down Raven, she decides to try and set the misguided hit man straight as he hides from the cops and plots his revenge.

Well acted crime melodrama that catapulted Alan Ladd to major stardom.

The more of film noir that I see, the more I love it as a genre. This has to be one of the best, if not the best that I have seen so far. Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd are dynamite. I can see how Ladd used this to eventually gain stardom through Shane and other vehicles.

Great early noir that unfortunately dilutes Greene's novel.Terrific performance from Ladd with stylish and tight direction from Tuttle, despite poor supporting cast.

Ladd and Lake work well apart and together, but most of the film is taken up with a chase that doesn't generate enough suspense.

An interesting slant for a 40's movie. The sympathetic killer. Although as with all hayes code movies, he still had to get his just desserts at the end. Veronica Lake was quite the looker.
