Rising Sun (1993)

When a prostitute is found dead in a Los Angeles skyscraper occupied by a large Japanese corporation, detectives John Connor and Web Smith are called in to investigate. Although Connor has previous experience working in Japan, cultural differences make their progress difficult until a security disc showing the murder turns up. Close scrutiny proves the disc has been doctored, and the detectives realize they're dealing with a cover-up as well.

A surprisingly good action movie. Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes are mis-matched here but work oddly well. Connery again plays a fatherly/mentor style character which he is great at but it's getting a little old. Wesley Snipes shows in the one fight scene that he is in, the early signs of the way he was in Blade. The storyline is suprisingly complex in the way that Enemy of the State or The Recruit was. The mixed setting of America and Japan works well creating a clash of cultures. Overall a great action movie that surprised me with how good it was.

An old school thriller that is still good to this day, although, the focus on competition against the Japanese isn't there anymore. Connery and Snipes had perfect chemistry of Sempai and Kohai and is surprising all the way to the end. Great movie to have in the collection, especially since it is available in high def DVDs.
