This sequel to the excellent In The Heat of The Night abandons the originals racial issues to explore the family life of Sidney Poitierâ??s earnest Detective Virgil Tibbs. Well, thatâ??s really the B plot, but itâ??s far more interesting than the A story involving Martin Landauâ??s shady Reverend and the murder of a prostitute. The A Story plays like a so-so episode of Law & Order: SVU (â??Found semen on the carpetâ?¦more on the table hereâ?¦hereâ??s some on the bedâ??) but I found Tibbsâ?? frustrated relationship with his son and frisky dealings with his wife to be a nice little glimpse behind the curtain. An entertaining but itâ??s definitely not the classic of the original movie. Not VF.

Sequel to "In the Heat of the Night" that exchanges the earlier film's emphasis on social commentary with an emphasis on formulaic police procedure. The social subtext is indeed still there, but only not as potent or rich. However, this would have been fine if the mystery that was being emphasized was strong enough to compensate for this loss. Unfortunately, as already mentioned, it is formulaic and the culprit is all too obvious. Still, the acting is solid (especially by Landau) and the mere fact that it does contain a certain degree of social subtext already places it ahead of most of its ilk. A slight recommendation.

Flat return by Poitier to the character he played in In the Heat of the Night. He seems bored and the film is poorly paced.

Tibbs is a bit of a fun movie, but not so fun movie that it becomes incredibly entertaining. It can be easily summarized as Sidney Poitier makes a cop exploitation movie, his way. Which can only mean while we get SOME elements of the genre, it's all done TASTEFULLY, there's SOME violence, but not overly gratuitous, some nudity, but it's not exploitational. So you know? It's certainly ENTERTAINING, but not overly great as far as Poitier movies go. Martin Landau is along for the ride, chewing up the scenery as usual. Finally, this movie shows some rather LAX police work happening. Poitier wanders in to a pool hall full of big beefy guys all by himself?Sloppy investigative work, but the biggest thing happens in the end, when Tibbs gets the bad guy, takes him to his car, with no handcuffs, and just LEAVES HIM ON THE SIDEWALK when Tibbs calls into the station, therefore enabling the bad guy to, you know, wander off. Pretty curious movie.

Norman Jewison's 1967 crime classic IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT deserves a better follow-up than this mediocre whodunit, which resembles a poor TV movie. Does score a few points, however, for its hilarious domestic scenes of Tibbs' hopeless attempts to discipline his unruly son, using cigars and scotch! Another sequel, THE ORGANIZATON, followed two years later.

Highly recommended for you
