The Man Who Never Was (1956)

The true story of a British effort to trick the Germans into weakening Sicily's defenses before the 1943 attack. A dead soldier is dressed as a British officer and outfitted with faked papers showing that the Allies were intending to invade occupied Greece. His body is put into the sea where it will ultimately drift ashore and the papers be passed along to German Intelligence.

Inspirado numa fascinante história real, o filme mantém a sobriedade em quase toda sua duração, permitindo que acompanhemos as inteligentes ações de britânicos e alemães para confundir uns aos outros.

True story that had to be good. Well made and convincing. We feel an urgency. The only flaw is the ending where they shortcut the importance of the trick.

One of the great forgotten war thrillers. The Man Who Never Was is surprisingly taut for its age, and the final sequence of events is almost unforgettably entertaining. There really isn't much depth to the film, but there doesn't need to be, it's such a romp. I would reccomend this to anyone looking for a good, light time with an old time film. In that way, it's a good introduction to the stylings of fifties pulp cinema.

As gas as spy thrillers go....one of the best. Timeless movie...a must watch. Classy, understated and thrilling with great performances and direction.
