With its electrifying flight sequences and high-powered cast, The Hunters is a mesmerizing film based on the best-selling novel by veteran fighter pilot James Salter. Set during the height of the Korean War, the story centers on Major Cleve Saville (Robert Mitchum), a master of the newly operational F-86 Sabre fighter jets. But adept as he is at flying, Saville¹s personal life takes a nosedive when he falls in love with his wingman¹s (Lee Philips) beautiful wife (May Britt). To make matters worse, Saville must cope with a loud-mouthed rookie (Robert Wagner) in a daring rescue mission that threatens all their lives in this well-crafted war drama.

Thrilling air combats, a good performance from Robert Wagner as a young stinker-hero, but long, tedious patches in between.

It is a pioneering movie showing jet fighter scenes unseen before in the movies, it's just a shame the narrative had to be so classically Hollywood.

with loads of dodgy scenes of planes flying about and a few of a cheating wifey sandwiched inbetween as an attempt at a story even robert mitchum couldn't save this one from the bargain bin. there'd be loads of copies left over too! in its defence i must say it did improve in the last half hour but it was all too little too late to keep my attention. dick powell was one actor turned director that should've stayed an actor
