It’s a very powerfully performed, intimate piece, perhaps inspired at some level by the classic adventure The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Mullan is very good at suggesting the careworn wisdom of someone who has to be a father figure, or even grandfather figure to men who don’t have his skill in self-control and self-denial.

I do like Mullan and I do like lighthouses, but dispite this I did not like this movie too much. The reason is a sterile direction and a non convincing story. Although it is inspired by true events the script did not much sense in more than one occasion, and even if you are not bothered about that, it is not satisfying enough. It is a shame because I liked the eerie atmosphere and at the beginning I was hooked... just until I was not.

As anyone knows who has had to work with people one doesn't particularly like or respect in confined spaces, it's difficult under good circumstances and it's going to get hairy when bodies start piling up. Just when our team was starting to bond, circumstances push each to their moral limit. It's refreshing to see characters each, in turn, grapple with their own capacity to kill. Sure, this movie has holes in it, but overall I warmed to these characters and I love a lighthouse in the middle of nowhere.

The Vanishing makes an unmistakable effort, but also feels like one, and fades almost fittingly from the imagination within hours of seeing it.
