There's still a few surprises left in Feuillade's 'Les Vampires'. Severed heads! Disappearing suspects! Cliff hangers! We're still stealing from it, even today.

There's an excitement to the action, the suspense, the gothic look and the performances that makes it far more gripping than you'd expect a 100-year-old, seven-hour film to be.

...this magical mystery tour through a deadly Parisian landscape is, like A Trip to the Moon, a towering and radical work of narrative fiction.
