Hal Hartley`s first masterpiece! It`s a real gem!

Tibor B 27 Mar 2009

Odd and quirky first feature from Hal Hartley - mysterious loner Josh returns to his small home town, rumours abound that he killed a local girl and her father. Local girl Audrey, a spunky apathetic beauty falls for him and discovers appearances aren't what they seem. Hartleys film is a wonderful combination of genuine emotion and indie quirkiness along with a great cast and script and was a big influence on many US indie films since.

Funny, heartfelt and defiantly theatrical. A superb achievement.

The loopy dialogue and ketamine-addled delivery are charming to a point, but I dunno, it's all just kinda goofy. Hal Hartley takes more risks now than he did in this first feature, and I think his later films have been more rewarding for that.

I remember seeing this on Channel 4 and thinking I'd discovered something important - I became a big Hal Hartley fan over the next few years.
