So often, romance subplots in Texas noir feel like afterthoughts, there to increase a little bit of tension. But South of Heaven’s most meaningful moments are in the interplay between Lilly and Sudeikis as the star-crossed lovers with time most definitely not on their side.

Interesting to see Jason Sudeikis out of his comfort zone in comedy, but almost everything in this film is too scattered. Some good moments and performances. Something here, something there, but little direction, and a certain lack of coherence. It was just too generic to stand out.

Written and directed by Aharon Keshales, whose debut (2010's Rabies) was an attention-getting nail-biter, South of Heaven—with a couple of exceptions—is inert and unimaginative.

Straight-faced and suspenseful at first, wacky and almost randomly nihilistic afterwards, South Of Heaven just doesn’t know what it wants to be.

I enjoyed this movie, at first though it will be something boring and more drama, but it had its funny moments and some action to it and was interesting throughout.
