Varan the Unbelievable (1962)

In an effort to find an economic means of purifying salt water, a joint U.S.-Japanese military command is set up on an isolated Japanese island where an unusual salt water lake is situated. However, their purifying experiments arouse the prehistoric monster Obaki from hibernation at the lake's bottom, and it proceeds to attack Japan. Although made by a U.S. independent film company, this film was based on a Japanese Toho monster film of 1958, "Daikaiju Varan", from which all of the monster effects scenes and a few incidental dramatic shots were edited into it.

Everybody involved seems to have held the project in some kind of contempt, putting in no effort at all.

A bit boring, and uses some stock footage from the original Godzilla, but it has good monster moments. Varan is an interesting kaiju who doesn't get used too much. The film is alright and the characters are decent, but it's not the best kaiju film.

Pretty lackluster entry in the Kaiju eiga series, but not wholly bad. The thing to disappoint fans is the film is very calm and relaxed, which is a nice change of pace, but probably not fully needed. Varan is one of the most wrongfully unliked monsters of the Godzilla line-up, which is disconcerting since he isn't even all that bad, and should have a come-back. The music from Akira Ifukube is probably his best work to date, and if not the best musical scores for any movie period! One very annoying aspect of the movie is the [accidental] stock-footage of "Gojira" that reoccurringly pops up.

Very good kaiju eiga. Not sure why we didn't see much more of Varan other than "Destroy All Monsters" but I guess being in the shadow of Gojira doesn't help matters much.

This is the original japanese version of varan the unbeilable, it was truly an amazing film, this version is better than the american version staring Myron Healey. for all you Godzilla fans out there, If you haven't this version please do you will not be disappointed, one other thing FORGET the american version.
