Varan the Unbelievable (1962)

In an effort to find an economic means of purifying salt water, a joint U.S.-Japanese military command is set up on an isolated Japanese island where an unusual salt water lake is situated. However, their purifying experiments arouse the prehistoric monster Obaki from hibernation at the lake's bottom, and it proceeds to attack Japan. Although made by a U.S. independent film company, this film was based on a Japanese Toho monster film of 1958, "Daikaiju Varan", from which all of the monster effects scenes and a few incidental dramatic shots were edited into it.

I don't think this is a bad movie by any means but I've seen much better Kaiju films than this. It seemed kind of forced and is almost a rehash of Godzilla or Rodan; prehistoric monster wakes up, starts attacking things on an island, blah blah I believe we've seen that one. It's refreshing to see new Kaiju every now and again, but compared to some of the others, Varan is pretty weak. Definitely not Honda's best film.

It's cheesy but it's still an absolutely fun kaiju movie. And I loved the lack of plot. It's just monster awesomeness really, start to finish. :D I seriously enjoyed how it was done. Good for the hardcore audience. I also do think GMK may've been even cooler if Varan had been one of the monsters. But that's me.

This is the original japanese version of varan the unbeilable, it was truly an amazing film, this version is better than the american version staring Myron Healey. for all you Godzilla fans out there, If you haven't this version please do you will not be disappointed, one other thing FORGET the american version.

An array of model tanks, toy planes, stock footage and hysterical Japanese actors face off against a man in a rubber Godzilla suit with some spikes stuck on it, all with the acompaniment of an all too serious soundtrack.

A great monster design wasted on a rather dull and half-baked picture, which plods along without doing much with its premise. A rare miss for Honda.
