The Sweet Hereafter (1997)

A small mountain community in Canada is devastated when a school bus accident leaves more than a dozen of its children dead. A big-city lawyer arrives to help the survivors' and victims' families prepare a class-action suit, but his efforts only seem to push the townspeople further apart. At the same time, one teenage survivor of the accident has to reckon with the loss of innocence brought about by a different kind of damage.

Beautiful and wrenching, one of the few films that adequately captures the crushingly enormous love of parents for their children. The film's central tragedy is beautifully framed by the bleakly lovely winter landscape of interior British Columbia. Haunting and deeply moving, this is a great adaptation and Egoyan's best film to date.

A distinctly Canadian masterpiece. A very rich and emotive pied piper story of a small town that loses its children in a bus crash. Egoyan at very the zenith of his powers.

There is a lot to love in this movie. It is so good I haven't been able to watch it since I have had children. Some of my favorite beautiful little nuances: --the character who is really the voice of reason can hardly talk because of a stroke, so his voice is unintelligible --the character who has the most moral authority also has one of the most ridiculous mustaches I have ever seen --the only person who really takes any action is physically paralyzed

What a remarkably sad movie. The tone is just right. Elegiac, muted, simply but brilliantly told. This film really got to me on a deeply emotional level. One of the few films that ever made me cry.
