The Sweet Hereafter (1997)

A small mountain community in Canada is devastated when a school bus accident leaves more than a dozen of its children dead. The second best film of 1997. Tragic and beautiful.

Moving, intelligent, delicately pitched between cautious hope and despair. Ian Holm has never been better - Gabrielle Rose breaks my heart every time I watch it. Really, astonishingly beautiful.

Possibly my favourite movie. Egoyan's dry as dust film-making perfectly balanced by the impossibly bitter-sweet story. Sarah Polly, Ian Holm, Bruce Greenwood - some of my favourite actors, all do marvelously. A rich and complex allegory reaches through this film and makes it re-watchable over and again.

Utterly utterly wonderful, beautiful, moving, profound, lachrymose.

Atom Egoyan is at his best with this zany look at small town life! After a wacky schoolbus driver accidently veers off the road and drowns a bunch of children, Mitchell, a big city lawyer must drag himself away from his drug addicted daughter, and solve the mystery. With a hilarious perfomance by Sarah Polley as the lone paraplegic survivor who is continually molested by her father, your belly will ache after seeing this family friendly jaunt. Make sure and bring your kids to this one, cause their going to love the heartwarming twist that befalls Mitchel's daughter: she has AIDS!
