Though this movie isn't the most amazing film ever made it still holds lots of relevance to this day. Melvin Van Peebles went through a lot to get this movie made and you see his passion in his performance as well. A must see for everyone, and the first blaxploitation movie that gave a voice to a lot of people.

Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song est un film-phare de la culture afro-amÃ©ricaine et a lancÃ© le mouvement Blaxpoitation. Le traitement cinÃ©matographique est nouveau-genre et psychÃ©dÃ©lique. Le rythme effrÃ©nÃ© donnÃ© par le montage nous entraÃ®ne dans la course folle du gigolo fugitif Sweetback.Par son traitement de l'image et du son, le film nous rappelle un peu la Nouvelle-Vague franÃ§aise, d'autant plus que le film possÃ¨de une trame sonore jazzy et funky. La camÃ©ra de Van Peebles filme la rÃ©alitÃ© crue, l'acteur/rÃ©alisateur va mÃªme contractÃ© la gonnorrhÃ©e aprÃ¨s une scÃ¨ne de pÃ©nÃ©tration avec une prostitutÃ©e, vous voyez le genre? Pour le combat qu'a menÃ© Van Peebles afin de produire et tourner son film, ainsi que pour son status de pierre angulaire du mouvement afro-amÃ©ricain des annÃ©es 70, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song est tout un exploit.

Perhaps of more significance historically than cinematic ally, I nonetheless found this a fascinating film. It was not a widely distributed film but in the limited markets where it was shown (mostly in "black neighborhoods" I would imagine) it was a HUGE success. Watching this film now (a bizarre, disjointed "experimental" film) it's hard to imagine what audiences made of it back in the 60s. It's certainly doubtful that it would have the same impact if it came out today... but back in the 60s the very *idea* of a film centered on a black hero on the run from some less-than-perfect police officers was enough to blow peoples' minds. The movie is very a much a product of its time (lots of weird color effects and editing tricks) but I think the "dated" aspects of the film help put the audience back into that particular time and place rather than distancing them from the movie itself. It's not a perfect movie by any means but it has a strength and a style and great passion... and, in my view, that trumps bland competence.
