Graceful movie, elegant direction, exquisite scenes and cinematography, refined acting from Isabelle Adjani - I can only think of superlatives when speaking about this movie. This is a bleak tale about a woman's slow degradation and ultimately sinking into dementia for the love of a man. It's an unpleasant journey but based of the true story of the second daughter of France's great poet Victor Hugo. The mood of the film is quite unusual and ethereally beautiful like the scene in the cemetery where Albert reject s Adele's declarations of love. And the background of the movie is unusual too, the American Civil war, things are not certain yet; the blend of the French and English languages adds to the confusion.

Nobody does crazy like Isabelle Adjani. In this she's the obsessive daughter of famous author, Victor Hugo. Adele, travels from Guersney to Nova Scotia in the hopes that she can convince English soldier Albert Pinson to marry her as he once promised to. Unfortunately for her he's no longer interested, and unfortunately for him she's not gonna take no for an answer. The film is lovely, Adjani's lovely and intense, but there's something missing that I can't quite put my finger on. Still, that it's based on the diaries of the real Adele Hugo is fairly impressive and overall the film is definitely worth a watch.
