The Snake Pit (1948)

Virginia Cunningham is confused upon finding herself in a mental hospital, with no memory of her arrival at the institution. Tormented by delusions and unable to even recognize her husband, Robert, she is treated by Dr. Mark Kik, who is determined to get to the root of her mental illness. As her treatment progresses, flashbacks depict events in Virginia's life that may have contributed to her instability.

The Snake Pit is about a woman who finds herself committed to an insane asylum and cannot remember how she got there. Olivia de Havilland gives a fantastic performance in the role of the main character. The movie gives flashbacks to her life and shows how she ended in the asylum. The treatments given to the patients back then is completely scary. Made in 1948, this movie about mental illness is considered ground breaking.

This film about mental illness seems like a rather progressive film for the time. It has the obligatory cringe-inducing shock therapy treatment scenes, Nurse Ratchet-like mean nurses and straight-jacket haul-offs, but it's the original that spawned all those (and was made pre-Nurse Ratchet). Mainly though, it concentrates on psychotherapy. Thankfully (and surprisingly, as this was made at the height of its popularity) there were no lobotomies in it. Anyway, it's about a woman who has amnesia after a "nervous breakdown", and her husband is there wanting to help her. Through psychotherapy and hypnosis, a helpful doctor helps her figure out what happened to her and who she is. The acting is pretty good, and the asylum looks and feels authentic. I like watching classic films, and I love anything having to do with psychology, so when this came on TCM I checked it out. Interesting to watch.

A bit of an oddity of a film this is, focused on mainly a mental patient, played very well by Olivia de Havilland. It shows the ugly activities that go on behind the walls of the asylum and it is quite frightening, but it seems a little over done. It also show what has impacted Olivia de Havilland's character and made her a bit crazy. A interesting look at mentally disturbed human beings. Note: Natalie Schaefer from the TV series "Giligan's Island" plays de Havilland's mom when she was little and Heriss, the mainly quiet woman in the mental institution, is played Betsy Blair, who plays a plain girl in the Best Picture winner "Marty" and was one of Gene Kelly's wives.

Olivia de Havilland is utterly convincing as Virginia, a young woman who has unresolved emotional issues that lead to her being admitted to a state mental health facility. While the ending is overly sentimental, this is a powerful and sometimes harrowing film that explores the emphasis society places on conforming to a set behaviour pattern in order to establish normality.
