The Snake Pit (1948)

Virginia Cunningham is confused upon finding herself in a mental hospital, with no memory of her arrival at the institution. Tormented by delusions and unable to even recognize her husband, Robert, she is treated by Dr. Mark Kik, who is determined to get to the root of her mental illness. As her treatment progresses, flashbacks depict events in Virginia's life that may have contributed to her instability.

Very difficult to watch. Like Cuckoo's Nest, it is a painful reminder of how mental illness was and is treated.

A very tough subject matter for a Hollywood studio to tackle & although finally taking the safer ending this is a confrontational film for its time. Olivia Dehallivand is brilliant as the unstable mental patient who past must be resurfaced. Filled with very interesting extra's & supporting cast you are effortlessly taken into her world & mind. It's not light hearted but is still engrossing none the less.

***1/2 (out of four) Not many films in the 1940's dealt this seriously with heavy subjects such as the mentally ill. "The Snake Pit" was one of the first and, I think, one of the best. Olivia de Havilland is a newleywed who falls deeper and deeper into depression until she must be institutionalized. The conditions at the hospital hardly encourage her recovery. Some of the moments seem overly dramatic and strange to us today. However, the film is actually very realistic as to the way the mentally ill were treated at the time. The best thing is the toweringly unglamourous performance from Ms. de Havilland. She evokes pity, strength, weakness, frustration, all at once.

excellent early look at mental illness and how there are often many causes for a person to lose themselves. a must see. great acting and good characters. good script too!
