Ashes and Diamonds (1958)

A young academy soldier, Maciek Chelmicki, is ordered to shoot the secretary of the KW PPR. A coincidence causes him to kill someone else. Meeting face to face with his victim, he gets a shock. He faces the necessity of repeating the assassination. He meets Krystyna, a girl working as a barmaid in the restaurant of the "Monopol" hotel. His affection for her makes him even more aware of the senselessness of killing at the end of the war. Loyalty to the oath he took, and thus the obligation to obey the order, tips the scales.

By not being a military deserter, what did he actually desert? This is an ass kicking tragedy with some moments that I will truly never forget.

Wajda's deeply romantic and personal vision, inspired by both Italian neo-realism and by the more baroque images of Expressionism, makes Ashes and Diamonds a gripping experience.

Everytime i've heard of this film its been called a "war film" and that couldn't be further from the truth. It takes place during(after really) WW2. And its more about how the end of WW2 was only the starting point for Poland and how one man is tired of fighting. Zbigniew Cybulski is very impressive in the lead role. He has a natural screen charisma that makes him fascinating for every scene he's in. Probably helps to know a little about Polish history. But its commended that Wajda doesn't lay out all the issues for either side and simplify it for foreign audiences. I did the dumb thing by having 'Ashes and Diamonds' as the first Wajda film i've seen especially since this is the 3rd film in his Polish film trilogy but the praise for this one in particular made me jump to this one.
