L'Avventura (1960)

Claudia and Anna join Anna's lover, Sandro, on a boat trip to a remote volcanic island. When Anna goes missing, a search is launched. In the meantime, Sandro and Claudia become involved in a romance despite Anna's disappearance, though the relationship suffers from guilt and tension.

I believe this film is truly a masterwork and among the greatest films ever made. Antonioni's masterful use of cinematography; the amazing script; the fascinating turn of events; the skilled acting all contribute to make this a movie of incredible beauty and intelligence.

Fantastic. A movie that sets itself as being about one thing and then taking a completely different turn. Sure it's hopelessly pretentious, but in the coolest way possible. It's also one of the most beautiful movies ever shot in black-and-white, with the images and sounds of the island being the most memorable. It was too much for its day...and still seems to be now!
