The Pit and the Pendulum (1991)

Set during the height of Spanish Inquisition. The beautiful and kind-hearted Maria is arrested as a witch when she inadvertently cries out in horror at the public whipping of a child. As Maria's husband Antonio tries to save her, Torquemada, the Grand Inquisitor, determines to punish Maria with torture for the desire she inflames in him. Loosely based on Edgar Allen Poe's classic short story.

Stuart Gordon and Jeffrey Combs again! I love Jeffrey Combs to death, but this is a so-so flick. Full Moon pimped out a Poe classic with random decrepit looking corpses and sex and what have you.

I was pretty disappointed considering I love most of Stuart Gordon's movies. It's not really anything to do with the Edgar Allan Poe story, just based around the backstory of the story. Parts of it were darkly comedic, which Gordon is really good at, but it ran a little long and the main christian girl annoyed me. I think Stuart Gordon is better adapting H.P. Lovecraft than Poe.

There is a little from the Poe story of the same title and a little from Poe's Cask of Amontillado in this film but it is mostly an original story and not a bad one. It makes good use of its limited budget in presenting some quality production values. The performances are generally good and there are some very dark touches of tongue-in-cheek humor. Not all that gory by today's standards. Nudity and sexual elements without much real eroticism or pornographic impact. Lance Henriksen, as always, does a good job in his role and brings dignity and a bit of sympathy to his villainous character.

Excellent witch hunt film. Henriksen owns the film as the sadistic Inquisitioner.
