I saw this once in the mid-90's during an insomnia attack. It was unforgettable!! Will be added to my personal collection

Stuart Gordon and writer Dennis Paoli constructed a great, underrated feature film of the Poe short story, The Pit and the Pendulum. Their trademark dark humor accents fine acting and an interesting adaptation of the tale which includes bits of other Poe work. Lance Henriksen in particular plays the Grand Inquisitor Torquemada with impassioned gusto and subtlety. The terror he delivers comes not simply from a well of evil, but from the more realistic fervor of one who deeply believes in their insane misguided views and acts on them. Definitely not to be missed. My only complaint is the short screen time of the great Oliver Reed, but he does much with his brief appearance. As much as I love Vincent Price and the Roger Corman version, this rivals it and maybe surpasses it, albeit in different ways.

Charles Band takes on the classic Poe tale here with help from a surprisingly good cast including Lance Henriksen, Jeffrey Combs and a small cameo from Oliver Reed! This film is combination of three classic Poe tales which aren't that bad but as you would expect pretty cheap 'n' cheerful looking at times. There is an odd element of humour at times boarding on spoof, yet despite this Henriksen gives us a chilling performance as the lunatic inquisitor 'Torquemada' which is a brilliantly over the top ham fest of a performance, bizarre monk hairdo included and those cutting round eyes of his. Rest of the cast are pretty useless and the effects and sets go from reasonable to down right awful. Plenty of fake blood and cheesy dialog but I saw this mainly for Henriksen really, his presence elevates the film to a guilty pleasure.

Yes, it's schlocky and exploitative, but in its own way Stuart Gordon's take on the Spanish Inquisition is a strangely sincere attempt to examine religious hypocrisy. Lance Henriksen plays Torquemada with total conviction and the brief appearance of Oliver Reed seems to be a nod in the direction of Ken Russell's arthouse naked nun fest, 'The Devils'. Despite the borrowings from Poe (in addition to the eponymous instrument of death, there is a quick grab from the Cask of Amontillado), the end result is quite close in delirious tone to the gothic horror novel, 'The Monk'. It's definitely got something, though I must own that the star rating above has been somewhat generously re-calibrated to make allowances for the notoriously low standards of the genre.

Stuart Gordon and Jeffrey Combs again! I love Jeffrey Combs to death, but this is a so-so flick. Full Moon pimped out a Poe classic with random decrepit looking corpses and sex and what have you.
