To find a Bette Davis movie, with Leslie Howard and Humphrey Bogart no less, that I hadn't seen was the first great thing. And then it turned out to be a beautiful, sad, and remarkably socially-inquisitive. One of those good plays-turned-film moments.

Okay, but Leslie Howard sucks and I don't like the ending.

Based on a play, this dialogue centric story is pretty good. At a dusty and lonely gas station diner, a young woman named Gabby dreams of someday going to Paris. She meets soulful drifter named Alan, an intellectual artist without a penny to his own name. Their lives all get twisted into a ball of tension as notorious gangster Duke Mantee (Bogart, in his debut) and his gang take everyone hostage. Themes of nature vs. man and never surrendering your true dreams are the main course of this meal, and the side dishes are hefty doses of tense suspense. If it weren't for the strong performances of Leslie Howard and Bogart, the movie would fall apart.

A lot of people complain that this is a film feels like a filmed version of the stageplay. Folks, that's because it IS a filmed version of the stageplay. Moaning about that is like moaning about chicken nuggets pre-cut into the shapes of little chickens. We all know the chicken nuggets come from chickens so stop your bellyaching and eat the chicken nuggets. Bogart is terrific in this film, as is Bette Davis, of "she's got Bette Davis eyes" fame.
