Gabby, the waitress in an isolated Arizona diner, dreams of a bigger and better life. One day penniless intellectual Alan drifts into the joint and the two strike up a rapport. Soon enough, notorious killer Duke Mantee takes the diner's inhabitants hostage. Surrounded by miles of desert, the patrons and staff are forced to sit tight with Mantee and his gang overnight.

An adaptation worthy of all the praise it's Broadway predecessor received. Bogart and Howard were at the top of their game. A great literary work, both literary and cinematically.

A hard movie to recommend, but it's really well written. It would work excellently as a stage play (and apparently did before this adaptation). Leslie Howard is fascinating to watch.

This is where Bogart got his first big break as a heavy in Hollywood. Thanks to Leslie Howard who suggested Bogart play in this film version of the stage play they both were known for at the time. The film isnt very long and the story is straightforward. Its held together by interesting dialogue exchanges particularly from Howards vagabond character of lost hopes and dreams. We have a very young Bette Davis as well who does good but her character wasnt as complex as the legendary performances she would give for years after this film was made. The Petrified Forest serves as a nice contrast for Davis and Bogarts careers. Great acting from all members of the cast makes up for lack of scene variety.

With references to TS Eliot and medieval French poet Villon, what's not to like? Bogart, Howard, and Davis do a fine job with their archetypal characters.

a number of odd little things happen throughout this film to keep it from being too predictable. bogart is a little wooden, but the intensity is brimming underneath.
