1931's Little Caesar And 1931's The Public Enemy Are Two Of My Favorite Films Of All Time.

No stars: Leslie Howard as the irritating world-weary aesthete; most contrived writing in the whole play. Evidently he owned the rights to the play, so he got to star in it -- stage and film versions. Four stars: Bette Davis, at 28, as the Villon-reading ingenue. Five stars: Humphrey Bogart as Duke Mantee -- menacing, tightlipped, badass. This was his breakthrough movie role.

definitely a cheesy film from 1930's hollywood, but it's characters are rich and you grow to care for them. i did find it odd that after boze, played by dick foran, completely disappeared from the movie after he *SPOILER* gets shot. it felt like the script completely forgot about him. none the less, it's a fun film in which humphrey bogart (who i'm normally not a huge fan of) steals the show.

An excellent proto-noir crime drama centering on a brief romance between Leslie Howard & Bette Davis all the while they and other guests of her father's desert gas station/restaurant are being held as hostages of Humphrey Bogart and his gang. The direction is very predictable but the dialogue is excellent and the acting is superb especially Leslie Howard as a British intellectual who has been wandering the country as a hitchhiker and Bogie in one of his first big roles. He is brilliant (as usual) as the villainous gangster (the kind of role that he was being typecast as at the time) on the run. It is often called Bogart's breakthrough and I can certainly see why; he nails the role. Another thing that's great is the pacing of the film - I swear watching it only felt like an hour instead of almost an hour and a half because the dialogue and the acting drove the film so well. Recommended viewing. 8/10
