This is the movie that made Bogart a star. A gripping drama set in Arizona near the Petrified Forest national park, this great movie stars a young Bogart at his best as the evil gangster, and an even younger looking (and quite attractive) Bette Davis, who falls for the starry-eyed philosopher/drifter, Leslie Howard. This is a must-see classic from the early days of movies.

Humphry Bogart is great in this one of the his first large roles, but the script and direction is pretty mediocre.

It's stagy, and I've never been much of a Bette Davis fan, but overall it's a solid cast. Leslie Howard is effective as usual. And it's probably the first time Bogart proved that he could play more than a heavy.

Great performances from Bogart and Leslie Howard, and the story has an interesting dynamic to it, but the ending is a little too sad.
