An Ideal Husband (1999)

Sir Robert Chiltern is a successful government minister, well-off and with a loving wife. All this is threatened when Mrs Cheveley appears in London with damning evidence of a past misdeed. Sir Robert turns for help to his friend Lord Goring, an apparently idle philanderer and the despair of his father. Goring knows the lady of old, and, for him, takes the whole thing pretty seriously.

This predates the recent adaptation of The Importance of Being Earnest, and far exceeds it. Watch this to find everything Wilde can be in capable hands.

David Keyes 01 Jan 2000

Such an adaptation comes across effectively because the writer's topics are not limited to certain time periods.

Minnie Driver doesn't have chemistry with anyone, in my opinion, but everyone else is fine and looks very good in period costume.

This is a fabulous portrayal of Oscar Wilde's charming play. The performances are all excellent. Minie Driver is as cute as can be in her role and Everett is awsomely frivolous yet profound.
