Tape (2001)

Jon, a first-time filmmaker, finds himself in Lansing, Michigan to present his film at a local film festival. Vince, his high school friend who is now a volunteer fireman and small-time drug dealer, also visits the town to support Jon on his big day, or so it seems. After a raucous hello and much backslapping, it appears that there is an undercurrent of tension in the air.

The chemistry between the 3 leads in wonderful, the dvd cover says never have the 3 given a greater prerformance and I have to agree.

I was on the edge of my seat throughout most of this movie, the twists had me oohing and ahhing as the three characters took control of the conversation, and the tension increased with every swoosh of the single camera scenes a great film which I will definitely watch again.

It's amazing what you can do with so little. Linklater shows indie filmmakers how it's done by filtering his one of a kind sensibilities through Robert Sean Leonard, Uma Thurman, and constant Linklater collaborator Ethan Hawke. This film has more twists and turns than a court room drama and is kept interesting by the keen eye of the cinematographer. Any fan of Linklater or of movies taking place in merely one location should search this out.
