My limited knowledge of this period of European history pins the influence of this film to Emile Zola, who wrote of the same subject matter in pretty much the same tone. The film, as well as Zola, puts both the capitalists and the mass under criticism, although the capitalists are of clearly the greater evil. The capitalists inhumanly exploit the people, but at the same time, it's the people's shortsightedness and selfishness that turn them against one another and make the inhumanity possible. The people owe it to themselves to see this movie. Marcello Mastroianni is one of the best actors there has been. He gave the professor such a tragic and comic character that makes him alive. Other than that, there is some of the best location photography to be ever put on film.

A comical advocacy for workers' rights. Well made and acted.

Forza I Rossi.

this movie is all sorts of amazing. not only a dramatic portrait of why unions were needed in turn of the century italy, but also a delightful humanist portrait of italy's working classes. lots of heart, drama, and laughs. watch it (and bring it to DVD!!)

Shot on location, the movie has a neo-realistic feel, but sometimes the framing of the shots gives it a beautiful cinematic vibe that is far from gritty, despite its subject matter.
