No one can play the tormented soul like Liz - and she pulls out every stop in this role. (O Susanna, won't you cry for me?) To see her and "Monty" together is always like watching fate happen - but I prefer them much more in Suddenly Last Summer. Eva Marie Saint is also a fave of mine but not crazy about this performance. Not a bad film but it doesn't live up to expectations. Seems like a Gone With the Wind wannabe. I'll toss it a bone and say the wardrobe held it's own!

In the vein of Gone with the Wind, another longish, Civil War epic romance tinged with sadness and tragedy. The original author took his own life eerily akin to one of his characters. Taylor and Clift are phenomenal, but Clift, after a car accident during the shooting of this movie, never really recovered his career after that and died much too young. Nevertheless, a prodigious and lavish effort.

Picture lacks highlight material; even the war scenes don't quite have the necessary impact and the relationship between Taylor and Clift could have been charged up more.

a tragic saga a little bit old fashion but Montgommery Clift and liz taylor are a wonderful cinematographic couple

The acting of Liz Taylor and Monty Clift is not bad, but MGM's effort to recreate another successful Civil war melodrama in the mold of Gone With the Wind is disppointing for many different reaons.
