Yes, the story is a familiar one. Yes, the characters are a bit stereotyped. But the film is so beautifully directed that those flaws don't matter. Every shot is ravishing, sublime. How the critics could fail to notice this is beyond my comprehension. If for no other reason, watch "The Only Living Boy..." with an artist's eye, and see what skilled direction and cinematography can accomplish in contemporary film.

This can be described as follows: (any romantic NYC Woody Allen film) meets The Graduate. Unoriginal, yet another bad imitation of Woody Allen--even the nerdy main character with glasses, wannabe writer, was a caricature of Woody. Please, people, come up with something original. These pale imitations have been done to death. Two stars are only for great acting by the cast.

Song reference or not, the title alone should be a major red flag, but there’s no way to fully prepare yourself for the navel-gazing narcissism to come during the film itself.
