The film needed a visual, edgy director to bring the material to live. The musical has great music and a strong book, but Columbus was a bland choice who doesn't bring any passion or point of view to the story. It seems like someone is saying "Next Song..ok check the song list, thanks.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Having not seen the play, i had nothing to base it on...but found it to be full of heart and sincerity. Cornball as it can be, the film is moving and touching in it's enthusiasm to please.

A self-proclaimed "Renthead," I hoped I was going to enjoy the film. I didn't. The charm, bite, and character of the musical didn't transfer well enough to the big screen. I thought they handled it well, the cast was great with what they were given, but there is something missing. There is no "so what" factor. The movie just sort of sits there. And there were way too many cheesey moments that were too far fetched for an audience to buy into. Angel and Collins running down the street singing "I Will Cover You," the god-awful exploitation of Rosario Dawson's Mimi, and a lack of sympathy for the film characters all added to a so-so show. The negative aside, it is still a solid musical with flare and gusto, but I would save your 10 bucks and put your money towards something better, like the actual stage show.

This movie is so incredibly AMAZING! Everything; the story, the characters, the actors, and especially the music, is incredible! All of the actors (most of whom are from the original Broadway cast) are amazing actors and singers, and all of their performances shine in the movie! But what's especially amazing is that Chris Columbus diected it! He did an unexpededly wonderful job translating this hit Broadway musical to the big screen! RENT has seriously changed me (I'm hoping to see it on-stage soon), and it will seriously change you too.

Rent isn't nearly as transporting a film as the Oscar-winning adaptation of "Chicago," but its energies and passions compensate for a lot of its deficiencies.
