An intelligent 50's sci-fi classic. Not the usual dreck from that time.

I absolutely loved this flick because of it's strange and unique plot. Here we are presented with a totally different kind of monster, something that isn't living. No, not zombies, not ghosts, but rocks. Yep, boring old rocks, that are in no way ordinary. These rocks originated from a meteor, and when exposed to water (in the worst case scenario: rain) they rapidly grow, and grow, and grow... until they reach a large enough size to break, fall, and get smashed into smaller pieces, which continue growing. People who become exposed to these rocks turn to rock themselves. Yes, it sounds pretty absurd, but I assure you the movie gives a good enough explanation for most of this. As for the special effects, they were quite good for the late 50's, there's nothing complicated to do anyway, just show rock crystals growing from the ground. The story may be slow at some times, but if you're into unusual subject matter you won't feel bored a bit. If you're a fan of classic sci-fi, this one is really worth the watch.

Simply boring ..watching giant black rocks grow to the size of skyscrapers might turn on a geologist, but does little for me. Typical 50s effort; I simply prefer the aliens or flying saucers.

One of the strangest 50's sci-fi stand-outs. Almost as if a geologist was consulted to come up with "the Monster At Large". A lot of fun because you never see where this one is headed. The banging piano soundtrack becomes a bit annoying. It proves having a large amount of table salt handy is a good idea. Short and sweet.

An oddity among the space invaders movies of the 50's and 60's. I give it a thumbs up for originality (Black crystals invading from outer space no less!), credible acting (for what they're given), but most of all as a timepiece tons of shots of vintage trucks and cars and ambulances, an old printing press that's hand powered, an old telephone operator switchboard (this stuff is cool!) and other stuff is very well filmed. The crystal monsters are kind of impressive and don't come off as too silly, but are kind of boring, well they are rocks after all! Jack Arnold directed , the print quality is excellent, and Superman Returns are in fact the exact same effects for the crystals ...
