Trying to rescue her home planet from destruction, a gorgeous extraterrestrial named Celeste arrives on Earth and begins her scientific research. She woos quirky scientist Dr. Steve Mills, a widower with a young daughter. Before long, Celeste finds herself in love with Steve and her new life on Earth, where she experiences true intimacy for the first time. Great to see Aly Hannigan & Seth Green before their BVS days

Directed by Richard Benjamin, this is an inordinately silly comedy that manages to be pretty likable if one can get past some of its harebrained premises.

Funny, yes, and Kim Basinger was really pretty in the movie. But there were certain factors about the movie (such as a really corny script, and an annoying daughter and alien sidekick) that ruined the entire movie. Alyson Hannigan really needed to grow up. Even seeing her with her future Buffy co star, Seth Green, did nothing to improve the movie experience.

Yes, everyone panned the movie, and watching it, you can see why they did, but in the end the silly parts of the movie are harmless, whereas the the outstanding parts of the film are unique, and make it, for a lot of us, worthwhile entertainment. What is outstanding? Dan Aykroyd is excellent in the film and doesn't miss a beat. Plus, - this will be your only chance to see Kim Basinger when she was young, and so intriguing and attractive, in a rare, light-hearted role. That alone makes the film special. (Yes, I used the word.) Steven MIll's daughter (Alyson Hannigan) does well, as does the dog, so the film is easy enough to watch. Finally, at this point in time (2013), there is a refreshing innocence and lack of technical sophistication present, because the movie was made in 1988, before a lot of bad things happened and before the global financial stress became manifest...

Plot: The title pretty much says it all, folks: A beauteous E.T. cozies up to an eccentric scientist (a disarmingly straight Dan Ackroyd) in an attempt to save her dying planet and falls in love in the process. Much wackiness ensues. Art it ain't, but this likably lightweight film does deliver the laughs, with assured leading performances (for once, Kim Basinger's formica loveliness is utilized as an effective comedic asset), a surprisingly bawdy sense of humor, and a riotous supporting turn by a then dewy-fresh Jon Lovitz. Good, undemanding fun.
