The Men (1950)

Ken, a WWII GI, returns home after he's paralyzed in battle. Residing in the paraplegic ward of a veteran's hospital and embittered by his condition, he refuses to see his fiancée and sinks into a solitary world of hatred and hostility. Head physician, Dr. Brock cajoles the withdrawn Ken into the life of the ward, where fellow patients Norm, Leo and Angel begin to pull him out of his spiritual dilemma.

While Brando's fim debut has the makings over an over-the-top melodrama, it is actually well thought out and portrayed. A war injury places Brando in a VA hospital in a ward where everyone's spinal cord injuries keep them in bed and wheelchairs. We deal with the depression that each character will feel. The isolation and lonliness. And later, some inspirational montages. But the film is largely honest with the difficulty that not only the soldiers faced, but also the people that loved them. And a great performance by not only Brando, but Jack Webb and Everett Sloane as the doctor.

It explores good issues although never really goes too deep into them, the overriding theme being the love story Wright and Brando. However it is still a nice debut for Marlon.

Brando's first performance in film, if you can find this movie I highly recommend watching it, especially if you're a fan of his (I don't know why you wouldn't be). This movie is realistic, dramatic, and romantic. I loved it.

The movie starts out with a written and audio introduction of how war has been around forever but after all is done some have a battle that can never been won at home...realization of being a paraplegic. Marlon Brando is amazing as ever in this film and I enjoyed ever bit of it.
