All at once it's a documentary, a work of fiction, and a comic and it absolutely works.

one of the greatest movies of its kind! truly one of my favorite films ever

Wow. Paul Giamatti has fast become one of my favorite actors, and this off-beat biography of Harvey Pekar (author of the "American Splendor" series of real-life comics and graphic novels) is now one of my favorite films. I found it presented Harvey's claim that "real life is pretty complex stuff" in a convincing, entertaining and thought-provoking manner.

American Splendor is beautiful in its blatant ordinariness. So many movies are about beautiful people doing extraordinary things and American Splendor is about average, neurotic people doing mundane things--and the result is far more fascinating than any big budget "Hollywood" flick. As Pekar says "ordinary life is pretty complex stuff".

Giamatti's best movie. He's fantastic, and made the movie.
