Probably the best of the Roger Corman Poe films, telling the story wealthy and debauched prince Vincent Price holding a grand ball to sit out the black plague. Gorgeously shot by Nicolas Roeg, before he himself became a director, this film is a real stunner.

Price is at his most diabolical here, while the stunning sets, costumes and cinematography help create an entrancing Gothic atmosphere in this which is most certainly the best adaptation made by Roger Corman of a Poe story.

This was a pleasant surprise. I find most Edgar Allan Poe adaptations to be lame, excluding that marvelous James Mason narration of THE TELL TALE HEART, and perhaps most especially THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER also featuring Vincent Price and directed by Roger Corman. Corman oversaw this tremendous adaptation of THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH which elaborates on the cruelty of the wealthy during the Dark Ages and adds a little Satan worship in for fun. More could have been done with the lighting and toning down the extravagant rainbow of costumes. Those lifted the mood a little too much for my liking, but overall this was quite an impressive expansion on Poe's original short story.

Watched 'cause the "And When He Falleth" song by Theatre of Tragedy is based in this movie, and like it. Great thriller from the 60's.

Very memorable and bizarre film. Vincent Price is in his element as the evil Price Prosporo! It would be a very boring film without him! The story revolves around the mental Prosporo (Price) Holding a masque in his castle to protect his guests from The Red Death! Some really bizarre and memorable scenes including the scene where the dwarf sets the a man on fire in a monkey costume in the name of entertainment and the most bizarre and disturbing scene of where Price gets his guests to do really bad animal impressions â??Can you be a pig, be oneâ?? it goes on for ages! The ending is memorable to the dance of death! A good and different film for its time, very well made, well worth a look just for Vincent price performance alone.
